Roseville begins layoff process
Megan Wood- The Press Tribune

City officials began layoffs yesterday as the deadline to close the $6.5 million gap for the 2009-2010 fiscal year approaches.

According to Megan MacPherson, communications manager, the layoffs began Thursday morning and will continue throughout next week. As of Friday morning, the number of city employees dismissed was unknown.

“We really won’t know how we will be affected until the process is completed,” MacPherson said. “I don’t have any numbers at this time.”

City staff was given some notice prior to Thursday’s layoffs.

According to MacPherson, the city has been working to cut costs for the last two years and have been working to avoid layoffs. However given the current budget situation, labor costs needed to be addressed.

A career counseling session was held Friday for city staff who had been dismissed to discuss available job resources.

“We want to do everything we can to help our employees land on their feet,” MacPherson said.

We want to do everything we can to help our employees land on their feet, as we lay them off but give $3,000,000 to the automall to cut down an existing wall.......... How foolish, Thank you Craig Robinson.

rsvlres, you've mentioned the wall before and it's a good point. I also think the creative financing that they used to bail out the builders Victoria Station was also a waste. They will never recover those gift loans they gave out.

Did the City consider cutting the large car allowances that many of the City's big whigs get? I think it's a good thing for police officers to take their cars home, but most city employeeshave to drive their own cars to work. I don't understand why the big shots get hundreds of dollars a month car allowances when the little guys have to drive their own cars. Do the City Council members still get paid to attend committee meetings?

Exactly what attempts has the City made to cut costs? I'd like to see more information as to what the city's already done to cut costs if this story makes it to the paper copy of the PT.

What kinds of services will be cut (if any) as a result of these layoffs? Roseville has traditionally had better City services than most surrounding communities. Will residents notice a difference? Will the hours of the library be cut? Will Code enforcement officers be let go? What about non sworn police employees? Last Christmas, the front desk of the police station (I believe) was closed. I couldn't understand that one. Will anything like that happen again?

People are outraged at situations like AIG well here is city government and administration close to the highest paid in California and they refuse to take any significant pay cut to save the job of a wrench turner making fifteen bucks an hour. City manager you couldn't make due with $185,000 like Sac City and save someones job. Roseville residents most of you moved here because it was safer and cleaner and the parks and such, everything good is changing because some want to keep their pet projects and huge salaries. Can't blame it on police, fire, parks unlike Sac City those departments are under paid according to other pay scales. You don't believe me look at crime rates and research the cuts to police don't ask reasearch because they will tell you differently. Park fees are going up and programs cut. But we are going to have a vibrant bar scene, and downtown who nobody went to in the first place. We will have a pool with a retractable roof and pretty landscaping at the automall even though nobodys buying a car. There will be a partially city funded senior apartments in west park and almost free housing at Victoria Crossing.
