District 54 pool play tiebreakers
Kurt Johnson: Speaking Kurtly
Kurt Johnson, The Press Tribune
Matt Razzano (7) and his Roseville West teammates will play powerful Lakeside on Friday night with nothing on the line but preparation for next week's finals.

As pool play continues in the District 54 all-star tournaments, most of the divisions are playing out clean, with no need for complicated tiebreaking procedures.

Once the teams who will be moving on are decided, managers will gather Sunday evening in Folsom to draw their teams' positions for the next phase of the tourney, the double-elimination finals.

As of today, Wednesday July 1, the Major field is set for the six-team finals as Ponderosa, Gold Rush, Woodcreek, Folsom American, Lakeside and Roseville West have locked up their spots.

Five of the six teams have been decided for the Junior finals (Woodcreek, Lakeside, Folsom American, Ponderosa and EDH South), and the final team will be decided on the field when Maidu and EDH North butt heads on Friday night at Union Mine High School.

The 10/11 looks to be fairly straightforward, but Wednesday night's games will be telling. A Maidu win over Gold Rush will likely move Maidu along, while Lakeside looks strong in Pool A as well. A Roseville West victory over EDH South will likely move that squad along as well, with Woodcreek sitting strong in Pool B.

The 10/11 tourney finals will be a four-team bracket.

In the 9/10s, there is the possibility of some intrigue, but only time will tell. Lakeside and Woodcreek have clinched the Pool B positions and their upcoming game will just be a warmup act to the six-team finals.

In Pool A, Roseville West can lock things up with a win over Maidu tonight, but a Maidu win and a Snowline win on Friday could create a three-way tie at the top. A similar situation is still possible in Pool C.

While head-to-head play will resolve any two-way deadlocks, the procedure in a three-way tie uses a formula. Each team's runs allowed will be divided by defensive innings played, with the best two numbers moving along.

The next few days will be fun, and next week will be even better.
