Options exist besides closure
Reader Input
I have a son who currently attends Sierra Garden’s Elementary School. I was very disappointed to hear that the school board is considering closing Sierra Gardens, (Press Tribune, January 18). I was even more disappointed when I attended a recent informational meeting and was informed that they are “exploring” the idea, however every time anyone spoke regarding any of the issues they spoke in the present tense as if it were a done deal. They have stated that this has been a consideration for a long time. Why is it that they are just now informing the parents? Why do they not have a proposal in writing? Why is it that when (Roseville City School District Superintendent) Mr. Rich Pierucci speaks he often says, I don’t have the exact numbers, we are just ball parking the figures? Isn’t it his obligation to present facts and actual numbers to know the exact impact that the school closing will have on the students and families? I believe that the IB is a good program to implement, however I believe that children K-5 would benefit from the program as well. Why couldn’t they keep Sierra Gardens a K-5, share the campus with Eich 6th grade and put the Special Education preschool that Mr. Pierucci states is a growing demand at Sergeant? Crestmont could keep the GATE program and enrollment would be up at all of the schools. There are options out there, the board just needs to be willing to explore them. Jenna Barnes, Roseville
