City View: Show off your poetic powers
Every famous writer started somewhere. You can start here. Join the 24th annual Youth Poetry Contest where youth in grades 1–12 are encouraged to enter their original poems to win great prizes. The contest runs Feb. 1–29. Young poets can submit their poems online at www.roseville. ca.us/poetry or using a paper entry form available at all three Roseville Public Libraries. Poems can be up to 18 lines long, either rhyming or free-verse. Only one entry may be submitted for each student and online entries are encouraged. Each year Roseville students look forward to submitting poems in this contest sponsored by the City of Roseville and the Friends of the Roseville Public Library. The library sponsors this event to foster a love of writing and literature among Roseville youth. Mark your calendars now for the Poetry Awards Ceremony at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the Maidu Library. All poetry prize winners will be invited to read their winning poem and receive their prize at the ceremony. The public is encouraged to support Roseville youth in their creative efforts by attending the ceremony. The awards ceremony is part of Roseville Public Library’s National Library Week celebration which runs from April 9-14. All winning poems are printed in a booklet and distributed at the awards ceremony, and available in each library branch after April 11. Submit your entry at any Roseville Public Library or visit www.roseville.ca.us/poetry for more details and to submit online. City View is provided weekly by the City of Roseville’s Public Affairs and Communications Department. Natasha Casteel is the City Librarian in the Parks, Recreation and Libraries Department.
